What is a Shortall?

Shortalls are one piece outfits for little boys. They are sometimes referred to as Jon Jons. (I have also seen it spelled John Johns) They normally button on at the shoulders and usually are worn over a woven shirt that has a collar. Shortalls without a shirt worn underneath are often called sunsuits, deriving that name from the summer sun. Shortall for the younger children, babies and toddlers, are fitted with snaps across the crotch to enable easy diapering.

Shortalls and longalls are basically the same except for the length of the pants. The longall is equivalent to long pants and the shortall is like short pants. Both longalls and shortalls are often styled to be clothing for special occasions like Sunday church, birthday parties, holiday events, family gatherings, portraits, weddings.

The designs for little boys often contain smocking or applique. The smocking is usually across the chest and normally is a design that a little boy would like. In the picture at right, the smocked insert displays motor scooters.

The appliqued shortalls are made by sewing pieces of fabric onto the clothing. The pieces of fabric are carefully sewn to make a picture. In the picture below you can see an appliqued crab and an appliqued frog. Bailey Boys is a designer boutique company that makes really cute appliqued shortalls like the ones in the picture below.

The other one piece outfit that is comparable to the shortall is the bubble. While shortalls are normally worn only by boys, bubbles are worn by boys and girls. Both are for warm weather and both are often decorated by smocking or applique.

What is a Smocked Bubble?

For babies and toddler, the smocked smocked bubble is one of the cutest clothing outfit that you can dress your child in. The bubble is a one piece outfit that normally snaps at the crotch for easy diapering. The bubble has soft elastic leg openings that allow my child to move and play comfortably which is so important.

Some bubbles have appliqued designs and others are smocked like the one in the picture.

The bubble can be for girls or/and boys. Some are made specifically for girls and some more so for boys.

Other traditional smocked outfits include shortalls and longalls. These are chosen for the season, long for cooler weather and short for warm weather. All of these smocked clothing styles are great choices for little boys' special occasions dress clothing.

Baby Boy Dress Clothes

This particular smocked bubble is made of blue and white gingham with a smocked design of light blue and pale yellow elephants on a white pleated background.

I love the accents offered by the white collar and sleeves and the trim of piping. The elastic legs opening of a bubble allow my child to move and play comfortably which is so important.

For babies and toddler, the smocked bubble is the cutest one piece outfit that you can dress your children in. The bubble normally snaps at the crotch for easy diapering. Some bubbles are smocked like the one in the picture and others have appliqued designs that can be quite darling on children.

Other great dress ups for boys include button on suits. These have an old fashioned look because the design is like the ones that were worn a century ago by little boys. The pants button to the shirt part of the outfit. I found this to be less than convenient for a toddler that is not potty trained since buttons had to be unfastened and paints removed before a diaper change. I do love the look of the button on outfit, but it is not as practical for the needs of children and parents. CUTE, though! I made my oldest child a button on sailor suit when he was two and he looked fine in it.

Another boys suit is the shortall for warm months and the longall for cooler months. These are made identically except for the length of the pants (short and long). The shortall/longall is usually fitted with snaps for babies and toddlers, so like the bubble, they accomodate easy diaper changing.

Baby Easter Clothes

Growing up in the South in the '60s and '70s...

...dressing up for church was very important. It was an accepted tradition by everyone that I knew that Easter was an event that required a "NEW" Easter dress.

My mother often made me and my sisters beautiful dresses with fluffy petticoats when we were very young. We wore patent leather shoes and usually carried a tiny purse that was delightful to possess at that young age. We even had little pairs of white gloves. What fun it was to put them on and take them off.

As we grew up, store bought dresses were the norm, but we always had a new Easter dress to wear to church on Easter morning. We were often in the store during the week before Easter fighting the crowds of shoppers that waited until the last minute, too.

By and large it is not the same today. You can get by without a NEW Easter dress. But for those families who are regularly attend church, I still believe that the traditional NEW Easter dress is a very good tradition to continue. It involves the children in meaning of Easter and the resurrection. The new clothes are symbolic of being clothed in the righteousness of Christ.

Smocked Nativity with Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus

The bishop dress is recognized by its round yolk of pleating. The smocking design is embroidered into the pleats and serves to hold the pleats after the pleating threads have been removed. The nativity smocked dress shown in the picture is picture smocked. Smocking such as this requires back smocking on the reverse side of the fabric to hold the pleats together since the smocked picture does not hold or cover the pleats entirely.

The wonderful advantage of smocked clothing is the flexibility and give that the smocking adds to the garment. Children can typically wear smocked clothing for more than one season if extra hem is included in the original garment. The hem can be let out for a second season of wear. The smocking acts as a soft elastic that allows for the child's growth. These smocked garments, known for their beauty and artistry are also extremely comfortable because of the smocking.

Smocked Turkey Design on Dress

I saw this little smocked Thanksgiving dress today and I love the design with the Indians, Pilgrims, forming a circle at the yolk and the TURKEY in the middle- gobble, gobble! The pale green fabric is a micro check (tiny gingham) and it is a perfect color to "set off" the Pilgrims, Indians, and Turkey design.

This top quality Carouselwear brand bishop dress, also can be matched with a smocked Brother outfit. Carousel also makes a matching boys shortall with the same Thanksgiving design (see in picture above). This is a great option for a family and makes the children happy to wear matching outfits.

Just taking a look at Amazon's page that features Australian Smocking & Embroidery, you will see that these magazines become valuable over time. Out of print issues often double or triple in value. This magazine is a sought resource after for those who love to smock and create heirloom clothing for children. Each issue includes a step by step lesson of a technique used in a project. You'll also find smocking and embroidery plates inside. The magazine offers you the option of ordering the kit to make the project from Country Bumpkin in Australia.

Just listed:

A lovely Will'beth gown and bonnet set of solid white with embroidered flowers and lace accents has just been put up for auction. The new with tags Will'Beth dress has a lace trimmed collar and sleeves and comes with a matching bonnet. As you can see the sleeves are sheer (see picture at bottom of post for more detail) and so is the overlay of the dress. The smocking is gorgeous with embroidery with pearl accents which can also be found on the bonnet .

The dress closes in the back with three little buttons and a pretty sheer bow. This is perfect for baby's Christening, Baptism, Baby Dedication or first portraits. The dress comes in size 0 and will likely be a treasure passed down in a family.

Little Boys’ Sunsuits

My absolute favorite outfit for my little boys is a basic sunsuit . Most people call them a Jon Jon or a Shortall. In the 50's and the 60's, they were called sunsuits because they were sleeveless and the pants were short...a great garment for a little boy to wear on a hot day.

Smocked Jon Jons are lovely, but appliqued sunsuits are precious for little boys. The Bailey Boys tractor Jon Jon is one my son would love since he thinks tractors are awesome. Well needless to say, these bathing suits are not smocked, but they are designed by Bailey Boys. Even though Bailey Boys started as a company catering to little boys' classic clothing, they now serve the needs of little girls and little boys as you can see by these appliqued swimsuits for girls. This dress is so precious! The first view is a sleeveless dress with a collar that is trimmed with lace. The second view dress with no collar and that has puffed sleeves.

My Smocking Story

I took a smocking class and learned to smock while making a round yoke ladies blouse. The yoke was smocked with a geometric pattern all the way around. The blouse had short sleeves which were also smocked, that gave the sleeves elasticity and comfort. I never smocked any more clothing for myself, but devoted my new skill to making day gowns for my first child. I don't have the blouse I made anymore, but I still have three of the smocked baby day gowns that I made many years ago. My first child, L, wore them, and then they were passed down to three brothers and one sister over the next ten years. All five of our children wore these smocked daygowns and they are still in very good condition. Perhaps we'll have some grandchildren who will wear them, too.

Over the years, I have enjoyed many kinds of needlework. There was a time when I carried a needlework project with me almost everywhere I went, in case I had to wait somewhere, I would be able to redeem the time by getting some stitches done. Besides smocking, I have knitted sweaters and afghans, embroidered pillows (crewel embroidery), made clothes for myself and my children, and quilted on small scale. Smocking is the most satisfying needlework I have ever done. Perhaps it is because the clothing I was making was for our babies and that motherly emotion gave me a preference for smocking... I don't know, but I still have the greatest appreciation of smocking as an artform that I have enjoyed immensely myself.

I am on the sidelines now....still admiring and appreciating, but not smocking myself. But I long to get back to it again. None of my children are married yet, but perhaps when they are and we are blessed with grandchildren, I will get busy and take up smocking again!
