I love this sweet smocked bubble for a little girl to wear for spring and summer. It is available today on eBay through the Girls Size 6 months page. The artistic delicate rosebud pattern is set off by pink & white gingham cotton fabric with its Peter Pan white collar and cuffs with matching gingham piping.  The bubble has 2 buttons at the back, and 3 snaps at crotch for easy changing.

Complete Book of Smocking

This book was published in 1982 so you might think that it is dated, but it is not. Since smocking is a traditional needleart, it's still done today the way it was in the past, nothing better has been invented and the designs, by the very nature of the art, have the same classic look they have has for centuries. Though the fashion of the dresses on which they are applied change and the colors you choose might might be different, but the actual process of smocking will be the same whether you use the old fashioned way of marking with dots, or a pleater, or gingham.

So, keeping all this in mind, this book is an excellent source of ideas, instructions, and projects. These projects range from baby clothes, children's clothes, adult dresses and blouses, to pillows, and Christmas ornaments. All the projects are lovely, classic, and timeless. The instructions are precise and provide both American and metric measurements. The charts are clear.

The photographs are mostly in black and white. This is the area I would like to see improved. The color used in the fabric and threads are a integral part in the beauty of smocking and the effect is dulled in black and white photos.

Most of the projects are geometric with only a few forming images. The overview and general instructions are clear, but you may fin smocking to be one of those skills you can't just jump into: you have to practice and practice and practice some more. This book on smocking may give you the motivation to keep trying.

I have come to realize that the best smocked bargains are to be found in gently used clothing. I have found "used" clothing like this that has only been worn once! This Petit Ami smocked dress in pale pink is just lovely for this season.  It is actually made of a fabric that has little pink with tiny white polka dots covering the dress.  You can't see the detail in this image. The smocking is exquisite with tiny embroidered flowers and little pearl beads scattered about in the geometric design! It is in great condition by the boutique brand Petit Ami. There is a 3 button closure in the back. Tag says 12M but could fit 18M or 24M depending on your little girl's size. It would be a precious little dress for Spring and Easter!

OK, this is the description so you will be aware that there is a minor problem with this pre-owned dress:

This is the most awesome smocked bishop by Castles and Crowns. It is from the very popular "Believe" line that is sold out and not available any longer. It is light blue with smocking of 3 white crosses. There is also white geometric smocking above and below the cross. The crosses have light yellow details inside of them and a vine running between the crosses. White piping around the sleeves. Size 4, approx. 27 inches in length. The dress is in great condition except for the fact that my daughter caught the toe of her shoe in the hem.  The hem is starting to come out in the front, but could easily be mended by someone who knows how to sew.

The silver lining is that because of this, the dress is likely to go at a low price which means savings for the winner. For those Mamas that can sew a little or a lot, fixing a hem would not be a problem. At the time of this post the price was $16.

This listing is for one gently used Mom & Me bishop smocked dress in size 12 months. This is a great Easter dress. It is absolutely perfect for Easter, Spring and Summer!!  It's yellow, with angel sleeves, bishop smocked with pink flowers in the smocking.  This dress was only worn a couple times and is LIKE NEW!! It is in excellent used condition - no rips stains or tears.

Here we have an adorable boys Christmas shortall made of green fine wale corduroy The focus of the outfit is the Gingerbread Man Applique. Every little boy knows the story of the gingerbread man and we all love to make and eat gingerbread at Christmas time. The Bailey Boys have created a delightful reversible shortall that is really fun for a child to wear for a special occasion. The reverse size is less decorated, since it doesn't have an applique design. It is made of green baby gingham and has green buttons on either side at the waist that match the buttons at the shoulders. The reversible design allows the shortall to be worn for Chrismas occasions and to also be worn to church or parties when there is no holiday to celebrate. It is two outfits in one. It is made of 100% cotton which makes it easy to care for and comfortable for a child to wear. A Jon Jon is a one piece romper. Some say the  nick name came from the fact that  John Kennedy used to wear them as a child. I have also heard that the mother that created the Bailey Boys line started the nickname.

For those who sew clothing for children:
Reversible rompers are made by taking two separate rompers and then pinning them right sides together. Then you sew around the leg hem of each leg, then around the neckline (where the facing would go) leaving a small spot to turn it right side out. Then you turn it right side out, press, and close the hole with a little fusible tape or some tiny hand stitching. Last, you can topstitch it.

I love this Anavini smocked bishop dress with long sleeves.  The dress features a smocking design on the yoke. The colorful Christmas ornaments of red, pink, purple,green , and gold hang from the red smocked trimming at the edge of the dress's yolk. The bottom hem of the white dress is embellished with rick rack which tops of the white dress with red at the top and red at the bottom.

This longall buttons at the front of the overall and also snaps between legs for easy changing. (FOR BARGAIN HUNTERS: I count it a plus if a clothing item is used, but in perfect or excellent condition because the price is always way better than new, but the difference in the final item is very little.)

Vive La Fete's smocked Christmas outfits feature a smocking design that shows what  the mice do the night before Christmas.  These three mice are stirring a little. One is peeping out of a bright red stocking. Another is camped out beneath a lighted candle. The third mouse is perched on a candy cane, maybe taking a nap getting ready for Christmas morning.

This hand smocked dress buttons down the back. It has short sleeves.  The main background color is red with a pretty rose smocking on the front. This would be perfect for Holiday portraits or parties.

Of course, day to day, the smocked clothing that is for sale varies on eBay, but I can safely say that any day you look, you will be able to find many lovely children's smocked outfits at very reasonable prices when you compare to boutique prices. If you buy gently used clothing, you can save even more.

Romper is fine wale corduroy and has the Santa, tree, and Mrs. Claus smocked onto the front panel. Pan collar. 20" long, 18" shoulder to crotch. No spots, stains, or flaws. Vive La Fete has a handsome design in a 2-piece longall. I love the Christmas tree design including a toy train, gifts, and a little boy favorite, the Nutcracker. This boys' outfit is smocked on lightweight red baby gingham cotton/poly blend!It also comes in light blue gingham.

The smocked longall has button shoulder opening and inseam that buttons for diaper changes.

The bishop dress such as this featured smocked dress has a round yolk that goes all the way around the dress. This yolk is smocked all the way around. Sometimes the smocking on the back side is different from the smocking on the front. I'm not sure what the back of this dress looks like.

The matching shortall for little brother makes for a great brother sister outfit for family pictures. The little white shirt that is worn underneath has short sleeves that are trimmed with baby piping that match the fabric.

I love this Orient Expressed smocked Raggedy Ann dress in size 2 toddler.  The cute Raggedy Ann smocked design is in the center of dress right beneath the piped Peter Pan collar.  This dress is made of cotton fabric, a beautiful  royal blue -denim blue baby gingham.  The red piping around the peter pan collar and is duplicated on the sleeves.  The back of dress is simple in design.  New smocked children's clothing is nice. Gently used can be a super good bargain to consider. Read description carefully and make sure that it says "no stains".

I love this new Orient Expressed light blue bishop dress smocked with a carousel design. The little boy's smocked short all or bubble is equally adorable with a smocked choo choo train carrying circus animals across the chest. The white piping on the collar and sleeves is a precious accent to the soft light blue fabrics.

What is a Shortall? Shortalls are one piece outfits for little boys. They are sometimes referred to as Jon Jons. (I have also seen it spelled John Johns) They normally button on at the shoulders and usually are worn over a woven shirt that has a collar.  Shortalls without a shirt worn underneath are often called sunsuits, deriving that name from the summer sun. Shortall for the younger children, babies and toddlers, are fitted with snaps across the crotch to enable easy diapering. Shortalls and longalls are basically the same except for the length of the pants. The longall is equivalent to long pants and the shortall is like short pants. Both longalls and shortalls are often styled to be clothing for special occasions like Sunday church, birthday parties, holiday events, family gatherings, portraits, weddings. The designs for little boys often contain smocking or applique. The smocking is usually across the chest and normally is a design that a little boy would like. In the picture at right, the smocked insert displays motor scooters. The appliqued shortalls are made by sewing pieces of fabric onto the clothing. The pieces of fabric are carefully sewn to make a picture. In the picture below you can see an appliqued crab and an appliqued frog. Bailey Boys is a designer boutique company that makes really cute appliqued shortalls like the ones in the picture below.

The other one piece outfit that is comparable to the shortall is the bubble. While shortalls are normally worn only by boys, bubbles are worn by boys and girls. We examine smocked bubbles on mysmockeddress.com in another post. Both types of clothing can be especially suited for special occasions for toddlers and babies. Both are for warm weather and both are often decorated by smocking or applique.

This particular smocked bubble is made of blue and white gingham with a smocked design of light blue and pale yellow elephants on a white pleated background.

I love the accents offered by the white collar and sleeves and the trim of piping. The elastic legs opening of a bubble allow my child to move and play comfortably which is so important.

For babies and toddler, the smocked bubble is the cutest one piece outfit that you can dress your children in. The bubble  normally snaps at the crotch for easy diapering. Some bubbles are smocked like the one in the picture and others have appliqued designs that can be quite darling on children.

Other great dress ups for boys include button on suits. These have an old fashioned look because the design is like the ones that were worn a century ago by little boys. The pants button to the shirt part of the outfit. I found this to be less than convenient for a toddler that is not potty trained since buttons had to be unfastened and paints removed before a diaper change. I do love the look of the button on outfit, but it is not as practical for the needs of children and parents. CUTE, though! I made my oldest child a button on sailor suit when he was two and he looked fine in it.

Another boys suit is the shortall for warm months and the longall for cooler months. These are made identically except for the length of the pants (short and long). The shortall/longall is usually fitted with snaps for babies and toddlers, so like the bubble, they accomodate easy diaper changing.

...dressing up for church was very important. It was an accepted tradition by everyone that I knew that Easter was an event that required a "NEW" Easter dress.

My mother often made me and my sisters beautiful dresses with fluffy petticoats when we were very young. We wore patent leather shoes and usually carried a tiny purse that was delightful to possess at that young age. We even had little pairs of white gloves. What fun it was to put them on and take them off.

As we grew up, store bought dresses were the norm, but we always had a new Easter dress to wear to church on Easter morning. We were often in the store during the week before Easter fighting the crowds of shoppers that waited until the last minute, too.

By and large it is not the same today. You can get by without a NEW Easter dress. But for those families who are regularly attend church, I still believe that the traditional NEW Easter dress is a very good tradition to continue. It involves the children in meaning of Easter and the resurrection. The new clothes are symbolic of being clothed in the righteousness of Christ.

Smocked Nativity with Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus

The bishop dress is recognized by its round yolk of pleating. The smocking design is embroidered into the pleats and serves to hold the pleats after the pleating threads have been removed. The nativity smocked dress shown in the picture is picture smocked. Smocking such as this requires back smocking on the reverse side of the fabric to hold the pleats together since the smocked picture does not hold or cover the pleats entirely.

The wonderful advantage of smocked clothing is the flexibility and give that the smocking adds to the garment.  Children can typically wear smocked clothing for more than one season if extra hem is included in the original garment. The hem can be let out for a second season of wear. The smocking acts as a soft elastic that allows for the child's growth. These smocked garments, known for their beauty and artistry are also extremely comfortable because of the smocking.

I saw this little smocked Thanksgiving dress today and I love the design with the Indians, Pilgrims, forming a circle at the yolk and the TURKEY in the middle- gobble, gobble! The pale green fabric is a micro check (tiny gingham) and it is a perfect color to "set off" the Pilgrims, Indians, and Turkey design.

This top quality Carouselwear brand bishop dress, also can be matched with a smocked Brother outfit. Carousel also makes a matching boys shortall with the same Thanksgiving design (see in picture above). This is a great option for a family and makes the children happy to wear matching outfits.

Just taking a look at Amazon's page that features Australian Smocking & Embroidery, you will see that these magazines become valuable over time. Out of print issues often double or triple in value. This magazine is a sought resource after  for those who love to smock and create heirloom clothing for children. Each issue includes a step by step lesson of a technique used in a project. You'll also find smocking and embroidery plates inside. The magazine offers you the option of ordering  the kit to make the project from Country Bumpkin in Australia.

Buying back issues can be quite expensive. I have seen them on Amazon for over $50. Just recently, I came across a nice selection of Australian Smocking and Embroidery Magazine back issues on eBay. Generally, the prices were much lower than what I saw on Amazon. I am sure that this can vary, but I am hoping that eBay with continue to have them for a reasonable price.

A  lovely Will'beth gown and bonnet set of solid white with embroidered flowers and lace accents has just been put up for auction. The new with tags Will'Beth dress has a lace trimmed collar and sleeves and comes with a matching bonnet. As you can see the sleeves are sheer (see picture at bottom of post for more detail) and so is the overlay of the dress. The smocking is gorgeous with embroidery with pearl accents which can also be found on the bonnet .

The dress closes in the back with three little buttons and a pretty sheer bow. This is perfect for baby's Christening, Baptism, Baby Dedication or first portraits. The dress comes in size 0 and will likely be a treasure passed down in a family.
